what happened to real conversation?

Does our society over-share on social media sites? How do you balance social media and in-person conversation? I saw this comic today on the Shoebox Blog and Gizmodo and I am ashamed to say I can totally relate. I’m so focused on staying in touch and conversing on social media sites that I often feel like I’m repeating myself during “real life” conversations. I’m even guilty of starting a conversation with “did you see (insert post or pic here) on my Facebook?” Has this happened to you? How has social media changed your offline conversation technique? It’s a topic that deserves attention seeing as though social media interactions are seemingly increasing every second.

    A few thoughts…

I really am starting to believe that social media/the internet is creating a generation of self-absorbed narcissists and it is ruining our way of communicating with each other. I’m tired of signing on and seeing a bunch of 21-year-old girls posting pictures of themselves 20x a day.

I’ve made a conscious effort to not post on Facebook as much because the older I’ve gotten, I find I don’t really like people knowing my business. And on several occasions, I find myself so eager to post shit on Twitter just to show everyone what I’m doing instead of living in the moment and enjoying myself. Example: When I got to see Paul McCartney a few weeks ago, I told myself I was going to leave my phone in my purse because I knew if I didn’t, I would spend several minutes of the show tweeting about it instead of enjoying and being in the moment.

    Just my two cents.

I agree! Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE social media… I’m so glad I have a way to keep in constant contact with people across the world but I wish that it wasn’t taken to such an extreme. As I get older, I too value my privacy a lot more. I am going to make a conscious effort not to post every-single-thing on Facebook for all to see. And yes, those that post 20 self-portraits in a week’s time are a major part of the problem, ha!

When I’m at concerts, I’m always taking video and photos on my phone and I find myself not soaking up the opportunity as much as I could. I think the next show or event I go to, I’m going to try to leave my phone in the car.
